Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

I believe students learn best by doing, reflecting, and taking creative risks. In both visual arts and drama, my classroom emphasizes process over product, student voice, and growth over perfection.

I aim to create an environment where students feel safe to explore ideas, collaborate with others, and build confidence in their own creative expression.

Drama / Theatre

In the drama classroom, students develop confidence, presence, and an ensemble mindset. Through improvisation, scene study, and performance work, they learn to communicate clearly, take risks, and support one another as collaborators.

I focus on helping students find their voice — both as performers and as thinkers — while building skills in storytelling, character development, and stage awareness.

Visual Arts

In visual arts, students explore a range of materials, techniques, and ideas while developing their own creative voice. Projects are designed to balance skill-building with opportunities for personal expression and choice.

Students are encouraged to reflect on their process, take risks, and see growth as an ongoing part of their work.

Humanities / Interdisciplinary Learning

In humanities, I focus on helping students make connections between the arts, history, culture, and their own experiences. Students explore how creative expression reflects the world around them and how ideas evolve across time and disciplines.

I emphasize critical thinking, discussion, and reflection, encouraging students to engage with multiple perspectives and develop their own voice. By connecting the arts and humanities, students gain a deeper understanding of both creative expression and the world they live in.

Process & Reflection

Across all classes, reflection and feedback are essential. Students use sketchbooks, journals, and critique discussions to think about their work, make revisions, and develop a deeper understanding of their creative process.

This focus on reflection helps students build independence, confidence, and the ability to engage thoughtfully with their own work and the work of others.
